Walter has expanded the range of indexable inserts produced with the Tiger·tec® Gold WPP35G milling grade to include to fit more cutters.

This includes tangential inserts for slotting cutters, round inserts for copy milling cutters, and indexable inserts for high-feed milling cutters.

Now, all standard milling cutters in the Walter range, such as Xtra·tec® XT, Walter BLAXX, and M4000, accept the new inserts for shoulder, face, high-feed, profile, copy, and slot milling.

The grade’s carbide substrate has a high level of toughness and is coated with an initial bonding layer beneath a medium-temperature titanium carbonitride (MT-TiCN) base layer, followed by a bonding layer to secure the highly textured aluminum oxide (Al2O3) layer, which serves as a heat shield and is covered with a gold-colored titanium nitride (TiN) top layer to provide simple wear detection. Inserts receive a multiple-stage post-treatment to improve toughness and reduce friction thanks to the smooth rake face.

The highly textured, fine-matrix MT-TiCN Tiger·tec Gold coating with optimized elastic properties of the crystals provides higher wear resistance than a conventional TiCN coating because the aligned crystals of the Walter coating enhance adhesion. In comparison, a conventional TiCN coating wears quickly because individual crystals can detach from the compound.

The WPP35G grade is ideal for roughing steel and cast iron (ISO P and K material groups) at moderate to high cutting speeds with average to good machining conditions. WPP35G inserts can be used when dry machining, especially for milling steel, or with coolant.

Targeted areas of use include general mechanical engineering, mold and die making, and the aerospace, energy, and automotive industries.

In an application machining cast iron, a WPP35G grade insert increased the number of parts per cutting edge to 31 from 17 for the existing grade — a gain of 80 percent.
