Kennametal Inc. has launched its new ROCO burr and down-cut routers for composite materials. These innovative routers feature the newly advanced KCC05A grade, ensuring a uniform coating thickness along the tool axis. This results in sharper cutting edges, minimal wear, and reduced flaking, significantly extending tool life. ROCO routers are set to enhance composite machining with their superior performance and durability, making them ideal for aerospace, automotive, general engineering, and medical applications.

The newest router in composite milling features:

Burr router:

  • Proprietary flute design improves the distribution of forces and reduces edge chipping.
  • Strong gash design produces more chips, allowing for more aggressive cutting conditions.
  • Geometry pushes cutting forces both upward and downward for decreased delamination when used for side milling and slotting applications.
  • Reinforced corners provide additional protection for longer tool life.

Down-cut router:

  • Left-hand helix direction makes it ideal for pocketing applications.
  • Geometry compresses fibers downward, reducing surface delamination.
  • Multiple flute design increases chip load at higher material removal rates (MRR).
  • Minimizes delamination at the top of the cut, making it ideal for applications with sacrificial support material.
  • Corner chamfers improve strength for longer tool life.
