Virtual Advanced Gear Education

The global economy, an aging workforce, and budget constraints have been at the forefront of the leaders of the AGMA member companies’ minds. How do you do more with less, meet deadlines more efficiently, and reduce waste? And how do you successfully educate your workforce during these times?

One solution is to have time- and cost-effective virtual gear education. AGMA now provides three distinct learning opportunities virtually: webinars, online video training, and online workforce training. These options provide an alternative to classroom learning, yet still provide compelling learning experiences.

In 2010 AGMA updated and enhanced its three online classes: Fundamentals of Gearing, Parallel Gear Inspection, and Hobbing. Each self-paced course includes both prep and final tests, slides, and a comprehensive study guide that students can retain and refer to in the future.

Through a grant from the AGMA Foundation, the popular classroom course Detailed Gear Design: Beyond Simple Service Factors, brings gear educator Raymond Drago to your computer at home or the office. The course has been broken into 15 one-hour segments that students can follow at their own pace. Students are able to follow the course and also pause, rewind, and listen several times to concepts that are of peak interest. The course comes with a printable 288-page course guide.

Detailed Gear Design: Beyond Simple Service Factors begins with a discussion of the true aim of gear design and brings into focus many of the often conflicting considerations of designing gears to meet specific customer’s expectations. Cost, reliability, safety, liability, and the possible consequences of failure are just some of the factors that are covered in this course.

New in 2011, AGMA is offering a series of webinars on key topics of interest to our members. Webinars, in a 90-minute format, can be viewed at your desk or with your peers in a conference room setting. Attendees will have the opportunity to interact with presenters during the live version, or download a copy of the webinar after it has taken place. The AGMA Webinar series provides an opportunity to learn from and interact with experts in the gear industry. Complete information on these offerings can be found on the AGMA Website at www.agma.org. Gear Expo 2011 Registration Now Open
Gear Expo 2011, “The Worldwide Gear Industry Event,” is the only trade show dedicated to the complete gear manufacturing process. This year Gear Expo will be held immediately following the AGMA Fall Technical Meeting in the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, November 1-3. Registration is now open at www.gearexpo.com.

Time is money, and Gear Expo 2011 will save you both. Discover efficient solutions to streamline your workflow, reduce errors, and increase productivity. Browse the exhibits, compare product features side by side, and capitalize on show-only pricing from the world’s leading manufacturers. You will be able to quickly source next-generation technology to stay competitive, lower costs, and improve safety.

Four Powerful Reasons to Attend Gear Expo
Make a more educated purchasing decision—Your sales reps can’t travel around the country with their heavy machinery, so Gear Expo is your best opportunity to see the equipment in person before you make a large acquisition. You’ll easily make up the time out of the office by holding a year’s worth of business meetings in just three short days.

Stay ahead of the business cycle—Gear Expo only happens once every two years, so you can’t afford to miss it or you will be left behind as the industry moves forward.

Take a trip around the world of gearing all under one roof—Exhibitors and attendees travel from 30 countries and 38 states to meet at Gear Expo. Hear what’s working across town or around the globe, and learn from your peers who stand in your shoes every day.

Get out of your office or plant and discover your next “big idea”—Engineers, managers, and executives often spend too much time an office. Don’t miss the innovation that will drive your company and careers forward.

Education Programs
AGMA will once again be providing advanced gearing education programs during Gear Expo. Below is a preview of two of the offerings (a complete list is available at www.gearexpo.com).

How to Organize and Manage a Failure Investigation
Wednesday, November 2
A properly managed failure investigation can provide valuable feedback about how a component performs. It might uncover shortcomings or weakness in design, manufacture, quality control, maintenance, or operation, and it can provide information for improvements that prevent future failure. In some cases the failure investigation can assess liability and determine whether a failure was a unique event or a symptom of a wider problem. In this seminar you will learn proven techniques for organizing and managing a failure investigation that will maximize your chances of identifying the failure mode and the root cause of the failure, and help you recommend repairs or improvements to prevent future failures.
