Dr. Valery Rudnev won the 2022 William Hunt Eisenman Award “for dedicated service to the global materials science community, leadership, development and promotion of induction heating and heat-treating technologies and novel technologies.” The award was established by ASM International in 1960 for recognition of unusual achievements in industry in the practical application of materials science and engineering through production or engineering use.

Rudnev, FASM, IFHTSE Fellow, Director Science and Technology (retired), Inductoheat Inc., (An Inductotherm Group Company) is known as one of the leading figures in the induction heating and heat-treating industry. He has more than 40 years of experience and is known within the ASM International and among induction heating professionals as “Professor Induction.”

Rudnev authored and co-authored numerous chapters and articles for many handbooks devoted to various aspects of induction heating, heat treating, material science, metallurgical aspects, computer modeling and innovative process development. His credits include more than 60 patents and inventions (U.S. and International) and more than 300 engineering/scientific publications.

In 2006, Rudnev was elected as a Fellow of ASM International in recognition of his “substantial achievements in induction heating and induction heat treating technology through the combined use of theoretical knowledge, experience, computer modeling, know-how and novel process and product development.” In 2016, the International Federation for Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering has elected Rudnev as a Fellow of IFHTSE for “his preeminence in induction heat treating, and modeling of the induction heat treating process.” A Fellow of IFHTSE is an individual who has made outstanding globally recognized and significant contributions to the development of heat treatment and surface engineering. He was a chairman of the Technical Committee of the Forging Industry Association of North America (2013-2016), a member of ASM Handbook Committee (2014-2020), and a member of ASM’s Heat Treating Society R&D Committee (2012-2021).

Rudnev has been a keynote speaker/invited lecturer at many international congresses and conferences. In 2019, he was awarded to be the Woodside Memorial Lecturer at the Detroit Chapter of ASM. The Woodside Memorial Lecture is named for William P. Woodside, the founder of ASM (1913).

During his career, Rudnev was a frequent contributor to Thermal Processing and Gear Solutions magazines, contributing numerous articles on induction hardening and more. He retired from professional activity In October 2021.
