Machine Tool Builders, Inc. (MTB) now offers SMG’s new SH550 CNC vertical gear hobbing machine, expanding the SH Series with capacity for workpieces up to 570 mm in diameter and swing capacity up to 750 mm (22.5”/29.5”). With the addition of the SH550 at the upper end and the SH210 as the smallest model in the line, SH Series machines are available to meet a wide range of common production needs for small-, medium-, and coarse-pitch gears, with pitch capability to 3.2 DP or Module 8 as standard.

The SH550 is built on the same highly rigid, compact platform that made the SH410 popular, incorporating wide box-way construction in the bed and column, a high-torque direct-drive table, rapid axis travels, and a geared hob head with multiple speed range options — features all shared throughout the SH series. This combination brings together the proven rigidity of old-world hobbing machine design with modern CNC performance and digital Industry 4.0 connectivity, while maintaining an attractive price point for North American gear manufacturers.

The SH550 can also be configured to fit a wide range of production environments, from one-off prototype work in a precision job shop to highly automated, higher-volume manufacturing. Custom packages include options for automation, onboard chamfering and deburring, Klassen robotic deburring and chamfering systems, provisions for extra-long shafts, and hard skiving capability.

For decades, MTB has been recognized for its intuitive conversational software on recontrolled gear machines, giving operators powerful capability in an accessible, shop-floor-friendly interface. That same user-focused approach to control design is reflected in the software environment supplied with SMG machines in North America, helping gear producers get up to speed quickly while taking full advantage of the SH Series’ capabilities.

“Now, with the SH550, we offer a very complete array of vertical hobbing machine solutions that delivers world-class performance at an attractive price point,” said Ross Wegryn-Jones. “Even better, sourcing these machines from Machine Tool Builders puts sales, service, and support in close proximity to our North American customer base, just as customers would expect if the OEM were located here.”

MTB expects the first deliveries of these machines in early fall 2026.
