United Stars, Inc., announces the acquisition of GearTec, Inc., a 115 year-old company based in Willoughby, Ohio. The company began as the gear-making shop of a Cleveland manufacturer, which was later purchased by the management team and incorporated in 1997 as an independent company.

GearTec specializes in the custom fabrication of a wide range of short-run gears up to 100 inches in diameter. Gear types include helical, double helical, herringbone, worm, and internal. They are hobbed, shaped, milled, and ground to AGMA Class 8 or better standards. These products are marketed to the wind power, offshore drilling, tunnel boring, OEM, steel, crane, and related industries for incorporation into a wide range of products.

United Stars also owns United Gear & Assembly, another distinguished long-time manufacturer of medium to high volume smaller-sized gears used in construction equipment, agriculture, transportation, engines, transmissions, and hydraulic pump and motor applications. According to Rich VanLanen, president of United Stars, “GearTec is a highly respected company with a strong reputation for excellence in very large and precise custom gears for a unique group of end users. Having both GearTec and United Gear & Assembly on the same team gives us a powerful one-two punch in the gear-making arena,” he says. “It is a very exciting time for the United Stars group of companies.”

GearTec is also excited about the acquisition and alignment with United Stars and United Gear & Assembly. “Additional capital and operating support will enable us to take advantage of growth opportunities now and in the coming years,” according to John Grazia, president of GearTec. “At the same time, our products complement the quality product lines offered by United Gear & Assembly, which enables us to jointly satisfy a total range of gearing needs.”

United Stars is also the parent company of The Electric Materials Company—a fully integrated manufacturer of copper components—and United Industries and United Stainless, which are manufacturers of stainless steel tubing. United Stars is a growing company, with its acquisition of GearTec reinforcing the its commitment to providing a full range of gear manufacturing services to a variety of markets.
