The critical finish machining of the tooth flanks of hardened gears now can be performed much more efficiently, economically, and to higher quality standards with the introduction of Gleason’s new ZH 200 Gear Honing Machine, the company has announced. The new ZH 200 joins the popular and field-proven ZH 250 as the industry’s only gear honing machines utilizing the patented Gleason-Hurth Spheric® Honing process. This process ensures that every workpiece/tool contact point is precisely controlled, significantly improving on tooth geometry, run-out, and pitch errors, producing a high-quality flank surface with low-noise tooth contact characteristics.

The ZH 200 is based on Gleason-Hurth’s ZH 250 Gear Honing Machine, but has been completely redesigned and modernized to incorporate a direct-drive honing head and headstock to deliver higher accuracies and speeds on workpieces up to 200 mm (7.87 in.), with maximum tooth widths of 50 mm (1.97 in.), and module range of .5 to 4.5. The ZH 200 can combine its high cutting speeds with an optional, extremely fast, fully integrated gantry loader system, offering the potential for significant improvements in overall cycle times.

The ZH 200 has been designed for exceptional ease of use, reliability, and maintainability in even the harshest environments. The Gleason-Hurth SphericÆ Honing software is fully integrated with the Siemens CNC controller, enabling the operator to create the optimum machining cycle simply by entering the tool and workpiece information. The machine software automatically creates the machining cycle.

Gleason-Hurth also provides the tooling: in this case both the internal gear abrasive honing ring for machining and the diamond dressing tools used to dress the abrasive tooling.
