In a recent press release Lapmaster International described the new Melchiorre Fine Grinding Systems, which incorporate the latest developments for flat finishing. Tolerance control to +/- 1 micron is achieved for part to part size, load to load size, and parallelism with flatness capabilities to 1 light band. Material removal rates are up to 10 times faster than conventional lapping. Key machine features include a rigid "C" frame structure, a ball screw and load cell for consistent and accurate down pressure control, unique in-process gauging which directly reads the parts being machined, and a fully automated load/unload system incorporating space-saving mechanized elevator systems. Abrasive grinding wheels are sized in wheel diameters of 500mm to 1600mm for grinding ferrous and non-ferrous metals, ceramics, tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, and a wide variety of other materials.
