Forest City Gear, an industry-leading manufacturer of fine- and medium-pitch custom gears, has launched the new Forest City Gear Technical Glossary, an online index of gear types, terms, and their definitions.
In communications with customers, friends, family, and the local community, Forest City Gear has found that gear technology is difficult for newcomers to grasp. So late last year, Forest City Gear launched the Technical Glossary as the first stage in a campaign of simplified, digestible gear education.
“A four-year course of study for mechanical engineering spends a shockingly short amount of time on gearing,” said Kika Young, president of Forest City Gear. “Now, we may be biased here at Forest City Gear, but we believe that gears — as the fundamental components used to transmit power and motion — are the most crucial element in mechanical engineering. As we lose a great deal of tribal knowledge across the industry within the gear world, Forest City Gear is on a mission to educate about the importance of torque, rotational motion, and wide applicability of gearing.”
The production of the Technical Glossary was a group effort, completed thanks to contributions from across the Forest City Gear family. The glossary was designed to be updated on a rolling basis, in response to frequently asked technical questions or industry-wide process updates.
“My dad always maintained an open-door policy here at FCG, said Young. “That’s a principle we still operate by. These education efforts are a continuation of that. We’re not gatekeeping here at FCG — we want to make gearheads out of anyone who wants to learn!”
