Daniel Matthew Tweed, Sr.—age 85, and cofounder of Carnes-Miller Gear Co., Inc.—passed away on March 28, 2008, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 1, 1922 in Marshall, North Carolina. Upon leaving home he worked briefly in Baltimore, Maryland, before joining the Marines and fighting in the South Pacific, surviving the battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. He returned from the war and settled in Mint Hill, North Carolina, where he met his wife, Vera. The two were happily married for more than 57 years. Tweed was very active in his community. He was a charter member of the VFW Post 4059, a founding member of the Mint Hill Volunteer Fire Department in 1952—including being named fire chief in 1965—and he continued as an active member of the board of directors until his death. He was also a deacon and an elder at the Philadelphia Presbyterian Church.
On his return from the war he worked at Perfecting Service Co.—a division of Duff-Norton—for over 30 years before joining Carnes-Miller Gear as a partner and eventual owner. He continued his work at the company until January of this year, when his health began to fail. He was a devoted husband and father, and he loved his home, community, and profession.
