To maximize reliable machine-tool performance for job shops at a lower capital investment, Mazak Canada presented the VC-Ez 20 3-axis vertical machining center during its Cambridge Open House.

Designed and built in Kentucky, the machine features Mazak’s MAZATROL SmoothEz CNC and is optimized for simple operation as well as fast and easy installation. All Mazak VC-Ez Series machines offer enhanced ergonomics, stable and reliable part processing and long-term dependability.

As one of the flagship models in the series, the VC-Ez 20 sports a C-frame design with X and Y-axis motion via moving table and saddle. For rigidity and repeatable part precision, guideway systems use Mazak’s high-rigidity MX linear roller guide systems, and pre-tensioned ball screws ensure precise axis movement. An auger-type chip removal system provides economical operation, with the option of affordable hinge-type chip conveyors that ship affixed to the machines to eliminate the cost of a second shipping pallet.

To streamline VC-Ez 20 machine programming and shorten the learning curve for new operators, Mazak’s MAZATROL SmoothEz CNC provides dual 800 MHz processors, 512 MB of RAM and a vibrant 15″ capacitive touch screen that includes a full keyboard and displays up to 60 lines of code. The MAZATROL SmoothEz CNC includes full MAZATROL conversational programming and EIA/ISO programming compatibility, along with QUICK MAZATROL for easy part-program creation and confirmation and MAZATROL TWINS for offline part programming. SMOOTH Machining Configurator (SMC) provides real-time process optimization of cutting parameters and ITS (Intelligent Thermal Shield) manages thermal stability for greater reliability and improved part quality.

The redesigned LAUNCHER screen uses the entire panel to ease screen selection and appears in icon form on every screen, with transition buttons to reach the home or a previous screen at a single touch. The control is responsive, efficient and easy to learn, even for new operators. To further streamline programming, the control’s QUICK MAZATROL function simplifies program creation and confirmation through touch screen editing and confirmation of 3D models.

For part size flexibility, axis travels on the VC-Ez 20 measure 1050 mm (41.34”) in X, 510 mm (20.08”) in Y and 635 mm (25”) in Z, to accommodate maximum workpiece sizes of 1,249.93 mm (49.21”) long, 492 mm (19.37”) wide and 569 mm (22.4”) tall and weighing up to 999.72 kg (2,204 pounds). For significant floor space savings, the ergonomically designed machine measures only 9.536497056 m2 (102.65 square feet) and uses a 26.5 percent smaller footprint than other models.

All VC-Ez models feature a powerful 40-taper, 12,000 rpm, 18 kW (25 hp) spindle and 30 tool magazine automatic tool changer as standard. Options include a versatile 15,000 rpm, 22 kW (29.5 hp) spindle with 110 kW (81.13 ft-lb) of torque and a 50-tool capacity tool changer.

Shops also can opt for a variety of popular options such as a rotary table, filter tray, dual probe kit, auger chip conveyor, through-spindle, or Niagara coolant, and Mazak’s SUPERFLOW 1,000-psi high-pressure coolant system. Other user-friendly options include a programmable coolant nozzle and programmable air nozzle, both controlled via M-code or from a separate panel to provide hands-free nozzle adjustment, 180°+ range of motion and precision teaching for every tool.

To further increase productivity and conserve shop floor space, VC-Ez Series machines incorporate Mazak’s Ez Tool Station to store tools outside the machine, often eliminating the need for separate tool carts.
