Philadelphia Gear Corporation announces the availability of a new ferrous metal filtration product called CORE to aid in continuous gearbox maintenance. According to President Carl Rapp, the company has exclusive marketing rights for the new product at power plants throughout the United States. The proprietary filter is unique to Philadelphia Gear Corporation.

Installation of CORE units will serve a preventative maintenance role in the service of gearboxes throughout power plant applications, as each unit is capable of filtering out metallic particles found in gearbox lubricants as small as one micron. ìTo put that in context, the smallest particle that can be seen by the human eye without magnification is 40 microns,î Rapp explains.

Additionally, each CORE unit is capable of holding more than two pounds of debris before cleaning is necessary, thereby helping to extend the run time of gearboxes and decreasing the downtime associated with maintaining and repairing them.

Inside each compact, cast-aluminum CORE housingówhich measures approximately seven inches by seven inchesóthe durable unit features an assembly of five magnets, each surrounded by a set of steel flux plates. ìThese plates create magnetic fields that strip ferrous metal contaminants out of the lubricant,î Rapp says, ìwhile keeping the pressure flow at its maximum constant rate and preventing any debris from washing off back into the lubricant.

It is also recommended that the CORE units can be installed in duplex configurations so that they can be changed out or cleaned without shutting down the gearbox itself. The minimal pressure drop feature makes it particularly suitable for installation upstream of pumps to provide additional protection. To enhance its versatility, the CORE unitówhich weighs just less than 20 lbs.óhas been designed to fit lube systems ranging from 1.25î to 2.0î without sacrificing any of its performance characteristics.
