U.S. Union Tool, Inc.—a wholly owned subsidiary of Union Tool Co, Japan, a leading manufacturer of cutting tools and equipment—announces a new range of rack and round dies for cold forming rolled parts such as worm drives, lead screws, and splines which are now becoming available in North America and Canada.

These forming dies are made in Japan, using Union Tool’s own grinding equipment and expertise to produce highly accurate and productive dies from HSS for rolled form parts. With the ability to produce both a conventional rack die or the more productive round die, these tools are used to produce many of the parts found in today’s automobiles, electronics, and aerospace applications, be it an electric seat, disk drive, powertrain, or motorized control surface on an airliner. These precision parts require unique tooling to very precise standards with both ultra-fine and fine design features and be able to withstand repetitive use and low cost of ownership, while maintaining very precise tolerances.

One of the unique features U.S. Union Tool offers is its in-house testing and pre-production sampling. This ensures the user can receive a small advanced lot without interrupting their own production to facilitate full compliance to specification before going into full production. This is made possible by the investment in some of the leading machines for roll forming at the company’s Nagaoka factory, where the dies are ground to specific designs, checked, and then tested by producing the finish part (leadscrew, worm drive, etc.).

Union Tool is recognized as one of the top producers in the world for these dies and is launching their service onto the North American market from this fall, through its United States subsidiary, U.S. Union Tool. The strong growth of this product is derived from ultra-precise grinding that offer a high quality surface finish on the formed part that in turn also gives the die a longer production life cycle. Test data has shown that these features are vital for the high productivity and consistency demanded by today’s OEM and Tier level suppliers.

The service was introduced at IMTS, and the company is actively seeking strong trade partners to help promote this product in North America, Canada, and parts of South America. It would be very interested in meeting companies already active in this sector, especially the gear cutting or cold forming arena.

“Union Tool is one of the world’s leading tooling companies, making over 25 million cutting tools per month,” according to Jonathan Hay, vice president of sales and marketing. “This same ultra-precise grinding know-how and total quality control is applied to the rack and round dies that we manufacture and our growth in this sector over the last three years has been phenomenal, to the point where we are now among the leading group of companies in this sector. Due to our global network in other sectors we are readily positioned to offer this service to North America, with a mature and solid supply chain and communications network. We hope we can meet both potential customers and trade partners for this service.”
