Georg Kesel GmbH & Co. KG has developed a new high-performance machine for milling the tooth profile on steering racks. The RMS-Steering design produces a full tooth profile on steering racks for cars, and on steering pistons for trucks, in one single machining operation. High cutting forces and precision result in a surface quality which makes re-working unnecessary. A fast conversion process makes it possible to respond to the growing diversity of steering systems in a flexible way.

“With our newly designed high-performance milling machine users are able to respond in a flexible way to the growing requirements on the market for steering systems,” says CEO Martin Klug. “This machine manufactures tooth profiles for power steering systems whose steering racks require a higher precision and surface quality of the tooth profile.” The high-performance milling machine RMS-Steering of the Georg Kesel GmbH & Co. KG mills in one step straight or helical tooth profiles on round steering racks or steering pistons. In a short cycle time, a finished tooth profile is created, including topping and full tooth depth.

The machine produces a level of accuracy and surface quality that makes the tooth profiles available in their final form. The racks can directly be passed on to the next production step. “Users reach surface qualities on grinding level,” said Klug. This is due to the no-play drive mechanism of the ball bearing spindles and the wear-resistant high-performance power transmission, which results in a very high running smoothness. For other applications the machine is able to produce tooth profiles with a tooth depth of up to 67 mm in one cut.

With simple and quick tool changes, users can convert the machine in less than 30 minutes and have significant time advantages. A manufacturer is able to economically respond with greater flexibility to the growing diversity of steering systems and have higher quality requirements for steering racks in power steering systems.

The company, founded in 1889 by Georg Kesel, is a major manufacturer of machine tools and work holding systems. Kesel today is an innovative and global engineering company for special purpose milling machines, manufacturing bandsaw blades, and racks. For inquires please contact Joseph Kemple at 765-561-4539.
