Ohio State Offers Gear Noise Courses

The Ohio State University’s Department of Mechanical Engineering will be offering both basic and advanced gear noise short courses in September. Both courses will be held at the university, and a brief description of each is as follows:

Basic Gear Noise Short Course
Sept.10-12, 2003 Cost: $1,300
This course has been offered for more than 20 years and is considered extremely valuable for gear designers and noise specialists alike who encounter gear noise and transmission design problems. Attendees will learn how to design gears to minimize the major excitations of gear noise: transmission error, dynamic friction forces, and shuttling forces. Fundamentals of noise generation and measurement will be covered, along with topics on gear rattle, transmission dynamics, and housing acoustics. This course includes extensive demonstrations of special gear analysis software in addition to the demonstrations of many Ohio State gear test rigs. A unique feature of the course is the interactive workshop session that invites attendees to discuss their specific gear and transmission noise concerns.

Advanced Gear Noise Short Course
Sept. 15-16, 2003 Cost: $900
This session is directed toward individuals who have previously attended the Basic Gear Noise Short Course. It will be taught through lectures on selected topics coupled with a series of hands-on workshops. Based on the interest of attendees, the following topics may be included:

1) Computer modeling: transmission error prediction, general system dynamics, bearing/casing dynamics, gear rattle models, and;

2) Experimental approaches: modal analysis of casings, acoustic radiation, advanced signal processing, sound quality analysis, transmission error measurement.
