Officials of Philadelphia Gear announce the availability of a new white paper titled “Acoustic Properties of Industrial Machinery: Design techniques to minimize gear drive radiated noise.” The document is written to help manufacturers manage equipment-generated noise in the workplace. The paper—which will appear in the December issue of Gear Solutions magazine—covers five aspects of unwanted sound:

• Sound generation, measurement, and characteristics;
• Environment and system characteristics and their affects;
• Noise tolerance of personnel and equipment, including present regulations and controls;
• Sound level expectations during spin test, load test, and field operations, and;
• Methods for noise attenuation through gear design.

“Safeguarding workers from noise in the workplace is an ongoing challenge across all industries,” according to Carl Rapp, president of Philadelphia Gear. “Our goal is to show plant personnel several methods for noise reduction and abatement, which can be used separately or together, to attack the problem. We want them to know that Philadelphia Gear is out there working on it, and willing to help them.”
