The Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CCAM) announces that Sulzer Metco—a leading surface solutions provider—has joined its organization, which brings together best-in-class manufacturers and Virginia’s top higher education institutions to collaborate and deliver new “production-ready” manufacturing solutions to industry.

Sulzer Metco is CCAM’s seventh organizing industry member and is now part of a group that includes: Canon Virginia, Inc; Chromalloy; Newport News Shipbuilding; Rolls Royce; Sandvik Coromant; Siemens PLM; Tier 2 partner Aerojet; and Virginia’s leading public research facilities: the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Virginia State University.

“Sulzer Metco has a proven track record of innovation, quality and success,” says David R. Lohr, president and executive director of CCAM. “They are a global leader in surface solutions, which aligns perfectly with one of CCAM’s core research functions—surface engineering. This is a game-changing addition to our membership group, and we are pleased to have them join the team.”

CCAM’s 60,000 square-foot facility currently is under construction in Prince George, Virginia. Upon completion in September 2012, best in class manufacturers will collaborate with accomplished faculty and students from Virginia’s top research and teaching institutions to perform advanced manufacturing research in two priority areas: surface engineering and manufacturing systems. The facility will house computational and large-scale production labs, as well as open production space for heavy equipment and surface coating processes, including a thermal spray coating machine, a directed vapor deposition machine, integrated data acquisition systems and a thermal conductivity measurement system.

“Sulzer Metco’s commitment to leading surface solutions has guided our company’s product development and growth for decades,” says Richard Schmid, chief technology officer of Sulzer Metco. “Today we are excited to announce that we are expanding that vision through our partnership with CCAM, which will play a significant role in future advancement and innovation.”

Headquartered in Switzerland, Sulzer Metco enhances surfaces with coating solutions and equipment. Customers benefit from a uniquely broad range of surface technologies, coating solutions, equipment, materials, and services, as well as specialized machining services and components. The innovative solutions improve performance and increase efficiency and reliability of their customer’s products. Sulzer Metco serves industries such as power generation, aviation, automotive and other specialized markets. For more information visit www.sulzermetco.com.

CCAM is a research-based collaboration between the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Virginia State University, and manufacturing companies worldwide. Manufacturers join CCAM as members and guide research leveraging both university faculty and CCAM scientists in two focus areas: surface engineering and manufacturing systems. CCAM is building a 60,000 square-foot state of the art research facility in Prince George County, adjacent to Rolls-Royce’s jet engine components plant. For more information visit www.ccam-va.com
