ASM International Celebrates 100 Years of History

ASM International commemorated its 100th anniversary with a celebratory gala on Oct. 27 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Nearly 400 guests, including ASM members, past-presidents, dignitaries and valued partners from around the world, came together to celebrate the society’s impact on material science and look ahead to the next century.

“We are a global community like no other in the industry and our gala reflected that sense of camaraderie,” said Thom Passek, Managing Director of ASM International. “For more than 100 years, in large part because of volunteer commitment and involvement, ASM has remained relevant and focused in materials science. The gala was a wonderful way to express our gratitude for a century of greatness. We are looking forward to a very bright future!”

Founded in 1913, ASM began as the Steel Treaters Club in Detroit, Michigan, with fewer than 20 members. Today, ASM is a thriving society with more than 30,000 members and over 80 worldwide chapters.

“As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of our society, we have a whole lot of accomplishments to be proud of and exciting things to look forward to in the coming years,” said Gernant Maurer, 2012-2013 President of ASM International. “Too often, professional societies sit back and go for the ride. At ASM we intend to be one of the drivers and are excited to see what the next 100 years will bring for our society and industry.”

Along with a nostalgic review and historical tributes highlighting ASM’s impressive past and a look toward the future, the event also featured a keynote speech by Dr. Peter Diamandis, chairman and CEO of the X Prize Foundation and the New York Times Bestselling author of Abundance: The Future is Better Than You Think.

Champion sponsors of the gala included Battelle, Bodycote, Inducto-Heat and Thermo-Calc Software. The benefactor sponsor was Solar Atmospheres and corporate sponsors included Buehler, Ellwood Group, Ipsen and Surface Combustion.
